Detroit has a rich history of basketball and has been home to the Pistons since 1957. The Pistons had relative success throughout the years, but the tides turned for the better in the 1980s. With some key additions, the team started making strides toward contention as the decade went on. As the Pistons were developing a defensive identity, one important draft pick in 1986 was Dennis Rodman in the second round. Although an under-the-radar pickup, the future two-time Defensive Player of the Year fit in seamlessly and became vital to the team’s success. As Rodman became the best rebounder in the league, Detroit rose to the top all the way to winning back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990. This dominant bunch helped set the tone for Detroit basketball, as the Pistons have had many successful seasons since, and Rodman is a huge part of that.
