Before Julius Erving came to the NBA, he had already been dubbed “Dr. J” in basketball circles. It didn’t take long at all for everyone to realize what a true pioneer he was about to become. Not only was he a high flyer around the rim, he was also one of the best all-around players of his generation. Images of Dr. J in most cases show his amazing athleticism. What he could do with his body while palming the ball in his right hand are forever ingrained in some of the most iconic sports images of all time. This is one of them. His body is completely facing the opposite direction of the backboard, yet he’s able to twist his arm back and finish one of his patented power slams. The design on this piece harkens back to the funk of the 1970s and early ’80s that helped build the NBA into the cultural beast it is now. Dr. J was and still remains one of the pioneers of the culture of basketball. This image sits behind the centerpiece, which is Dr. J’s autograph on top of a piece of “Springfield” parchment-type paper. That piece of paper is then framed internally before the entire piece is framed to give it a true finish. This piece is limited to only 6 to match his retired number.
