The game of hockey has been played on many of frozen ponds throughout Canada and colder parts of the United States. Games are often spontaneous and self-organized. The frigid landscapes in which these games are played can often times be picturesque. In 2008, the NHL instituted the Winter Classic as an annual January 1 outdoor game. This annual game has been a huge ratings success for the league and has brought nontraditional hockey fans to the game. “Frozen Pond” places hockey hall of famers Brett Hull and Wayne Gretzky on the open tundra for a faceoff.
